A Proud Stroud Local

A pub with deep roots in Stroud, steeped in heritage and tradition since 1891.

We began our chapter in June 2025, proud to carry on its story as a much-loved place for the local community.

The Story
Behind the Name

The Clothiers Arms takes its name from Stroud’s long history in the wool trade.

The town was once at the heart of cloth-making in Britain, known for the famous Stroudwater Red Cloth, used for military uniforms. Its rich colour and lasting quality came from the natural salts in the local water.

That textile heritage still lives on today, just across the road at WSP Textiles, one of the last remaining manufacturers in Stroud.

Mrs Bennett’s Sweet Shop

One of the pub’s most notable figures was Mrs Ellen Bennett, who ran The Clothiers for 50 years, from 1902 to 1952.

Back then, it was both a beer house and a sweet shop. We’ve brought a little nod to her legacy back to life with Mrs Bennett’s Sweet Shop, tucked inside the restaurant area.

A small detail, but one we love.

Beer Garden & Play Area

Long afternoons. Summer weekends. A beer garden that feels like it belongs to the whole community. With the adventure play area just next door, it’s easy for everyone to settle in and stay a while.

Clothiers Family

We love what we do. Good pints, good food, and making sure everyone feels at home from the moment they arrive.

If you haven’t popped in yet, we’d love to see you.
